My four books are set partially or entirely in Maine, with the majority specific to northwestern Maine. Each title has a different storyline, but the location remains the same, whether in the historical fiction , A Long Way to Walk or the purely fictional Stranded. Life in the Backwoods is fiction; however, the setting is western Maine and mirrors the location of a once well-known sporting camp. Last Hike deviates somewhat from the unorganized Franklin and Somerset County townships. This story begins in southern Maine and shifts to Switzerland and back to Maine.

Dan Simmons saw being fired by an engineering firm in Bangor, Maine, as the perfect opportunity to spend the winter with his wife, Kathy, at their cabin on a remote pond in northwestern Maine. They enjoyed their time snuggled in their cabin until the weather dramatically changed. As their food supply dwindled, they knew they needed to leave before all their food was gone. Ten miles south of Kathy and Dan's cabin, three families of backwoods survivalists lived by raiding camps and stealing food and anything of value. Frankie, the clan patriarch, was mad at the world and became absorbed in trying to stop Kath and Dan from escaping the mountains. It was a game of cat and mouse, and Frankie enjoyed every minute of it.
